PETALING JAYA: Mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman has called on his staff to work doubly hard during Ramadan.

"I hope they will not take the opportunity to take things easy. We must continue to serve the public well.

"It will be rewarding as working hard during Ramadan  brings us more blessings," he said, after presenting boxes of dates to council staff recently.

This is the sixth year the council is giving dates to its employees.

The council also gave 50 senior citizens  RM150 and goodie bags containing daily essentials such as cereal and milk and a piece of batik cloth each under the  "Tautan Kasih Warga Emas" programme.

The recipients, registered under the City Poverty Eradication programme, are residents of PPR Kota Damansara, PPR Lembah Subang, Petaling Jaya Selatan, Desa Mentari and Impian Baiduri.

Maznah Dasuki, 75, said she was happy beyond words to receive the bag of goodies and cash.

"All of the items in the goodie bag are good for old people like me. I am grateful to the council for this Ramadan gift."

Her neighbour, Fatimah Ali, 68, said she would use the batik cloth to make her Hari Raya outfit.

"I will make it into a long skirt and get a kebaya top in matching colour."

Othman Mat Sarsad, 70, of PPR Kota Damansara, said:  "I have not been able to work as I have been sick. So this gift comes as a blessing.

"I am thankful to the council," he said.
