SEMI-FINALIST: The PJ council was short-listed for its efforts in creating a barrier-free city

PETALING JAYA: THE Petaling Jaya City Council has been shortlisted as one of the 40 semi-finalists for the Commonwealth Association For Public Administration and Management (CAPAM) award under the category for Innovations in Citizen Engagement and Dialogue.

The CAPAM International Innovations awards celebrate the spirit of innovation in the public service by recognising organisations that have made significant contributions to improving governance and services in the public sector.

The council was short-listed for its efforts in  creating a barrier-free city.

The results will be announced at the 2012 CAPAM Biennial Conference in  Delhi, India, in October, said mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman.

This year the council was also ranked third place by the Malaysian Urban Indicator (MURNI Net) developed by the Federal Department of Town and Country Planning Peninsular Malaysia under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.

It was reported that in 2011, Petaling Jaya had a gross development value of RM21 billion, said councillor Derek Fernandez.

"Despite the intense developments taking place in the city, the council had made it mandatory for new housing developments to abide by efforts such as rain water harvesting to ensure the city becomes a more sustainable place for its residents," said Fernandez.

The achievements were highlighted at the signing of memorandum of the Second International Livable Cities Conference Petaling Jaya 2012 between the council and Malaysian Institute of Planners.

The conference will be attended and chaired by panelists such as the Lord Mayor of Perth Lisa Scaffidi.

The council welcomes students, professionals and residents to attend the conference to exchange ideas and to plan the future of the city.

"The exchange of knowledge between Perth and Petaling Jaya could help us model a better city. Perth is just like Petaling Jaya in terms of size," said Roslan.

The conference will be held at the Royal Bintang Hotel  in Petaling Jaya on July 18 and 19.
