WORLD-CLASS:Sunway Lagoon brings in another West-End type show

SUNWAY Lagoon will be bringing another treat for musical theatre lovers with London, the Summer Musical.

"Since the Peter Pan musical in 2010, we have seen a growing interest," said Sunway Shopping Malls and Theme Parks chief executive officer, Chan Hoi Choy, at the ticket launch recently.

Also present  were Sunway Shopping Malls and Theme Parks assistant general manager Adron Leow, London, the Summer Musical director Chris Colby and choreographer David Kort.

"With the focus on London this year of the London Olympics, we thought it appropriate to bring the theme of London in our next musical," said Chan.

The production, which costs RM3.8 million, will have an international cast including six actors flying in from London.

"I am happy that Sunway Lagoon sees the importance of performing arts as today there are more youngsters enjoying musicals, thanks to TV shows like Glee," Colby said.

Colby noted that Malaysians know how to enjoy musical theatre as he saw the audience dancing along during the Aladdin show of 2011.

"Malaysians are also not as reserved as they used to be, as they will honestly tell you what they thought about a play," said Colby.

"This is a good thing because it not only shows that Malaysians are now more familiar with musicals, but it also makes us improve ourselves and go to higher levels," added Kort.

London, the Summer Musical tells the story of flight attendants with 48 hours to explore London in a carefree summer atmosphere.

It will feature hit songs from the 70s onwards, including those from Mamma Mia, Footloose, Glee, The Lion King, Smash, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and James Bond movies.

Tickets are available at Sunway Lagoon ticketing counters and AirAsiaRedTix at RM150, RM100 and RM80.

The first 500 people to purchase tickets for the musical from the Sunway Lagoon counters will get one free Sunway Lagoon All Park ticket and a Lost World of Tambun theme park ticket  worth over RM140.

The following 500 people to do the same purchase will get a Sunway Lagoon All Parks ticket worth RM100.

The early bird special promo will be available until May 14.

As part of its corporate social responsibility programme, Sunway Lagoon has also allocated 20,000 complimentary seats for underprivileged groups.

"We want more people to be able to come to our musicals as they should be enjoyed by everyone regardless of background," said Leow.

London, the Summer Musical will be playing at the Amphitheatre @ Sunway Lagoon from June 1 to July 8 daily, except on Tuesdays, at 8pm.
