SHIPSHAPE: Passengers enjoy improved luxury and more dining options on board the newly refurbished cruise ship
KUALA LUMPUR: STAR Cruises' holiday cruise ship SuperStar Libra has emerged from its recent facelift with a more luxurious setting and pork-free restaurants for its Muslim passengers.
The vessel, which has been offering one-night Penang island round trips daily since 2010, is also favoured for its weekly port-of-call trips to Krabi and Phuket in Thailand. It will also be making its first voyage to Yangon, Vietnam in May, and again in August
Two restaurants onboard the vessel, Spices and Mariner's Buffet, serve pork-free meals that feature a mix of local and international cuisine, accompanied by great views of the endless ocean.
Spices is a new fine-dining restaurant that offers traditional Malay hidang sets comprising familiar delights such as beef rendang, briyani, tom yam, lobster petai and beef kuzi. Sparkling drinks from freshly-made fruit juices are available to go with the meals, and tantalising desserts with tea or coffee to finish.
The restaurant exudes regality, with splashes of Moghul eccentricity. It is on Deck 10 and accessible through the entrance of Blue Lagoon, a snacks and refreshments outlet.
Mariner's Buffet just below deck offers local and Western favourites such as fried rice, noodles, nasi lemak, waffles, turkey slices, chicken cocktails, beef bacon, mushroom soup, cereals, freshly cut fruits, juices, coffee and tea.
Passengers have the option of dining inside the air-conditioned restaurant or out in the sunshine at the open deck dining areas next to pool bar.
Passengers are allowed six meals a day at Mariner's Buffet, Four Seasons, which offers Western food, and Ocean Palace, which serves Chinese cuisine. Snack, drinks and a la carte menu items are chargeable.
The 216m-long ship can accommodate 1,798 passengers each trip. There are 687 cabins -- there is the standard inside stateroom, ocean view stateroom with porthole, ocean view stateroom with window, deluxe ocean view stateroom, junior suite and executive suite.
Each room comes with the ship's Star Navigator bulletin with information on the ship's daily programmes such as island tours, social events and parties. The bulletin also has safety guides and useful reminders for passengers on board the ship or disembarking for an island excursion.
Each deck of the ship offers fun activities and facilities such as a games centre, fitness centre, golf driving range, Internet cafe, beauty salon, retail outlets and even a medical centre.
