SPEAKING UP:Global Movement of Moderates Foundation sets up website to pomote balanced views

THE Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMMF) launched its website www.gmomf.org recently.

GMMF is the brainchild of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

It disseminates information on the concept of moderation in an effort to combat extremism in five broad areas.

These are peaceful co-existence, democracy and rule of law, international finance, education and conflict resolution.

Najib first called for members and leaders of the world's major faiths to censure and reject  extremism through moderation at the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2010.

This was supported by United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, Asean secretary-general Dr Surin Pitsuwan, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister  Marty Natalegawa.

The website, launched by GMMF board of trustee members Datuk Mazri Muhammad and Muhd Khair Ngadiron, is one of the foundation's  communication tools to spread information on combating extremism with moderation.

The online portal was also set up because GMMF realises that moderation is a fragile concept  in a multicultural and multi-religious world which can easily succumb to  extremism.

It contains  introductory and supportive materials that the public can download and share.

"The foundation has  organised a series of activities since April but the priority was to come up with a significant database of fellow moderates from around the world.

"We are prepared to take on the challenge to inspire moderates worldwide to speak up  and drown out the voices of extremists and radicals," said GMMF chief executive officer Khalek Awang.

Khalek  announced that GMMF was now the patron of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations' (UNAOC) partner forum, where it would play a role in shaping the agenda of a peaceful coexistence in collaboration with  non-governmental organisations and corporations.

International Islamic University Malaysia former rector Tan Sri Dr Muhammad Kamal Hassan was  present as a guest speaker.

The author of Voice of Islamic Moderation From the Malay World, which was launched earlier this year, spoke briefly about moderation in Islamic fasting.
