STARDOM: Nationwide search to seek the country’s best Mandarin local talent

KUALA LUMPUR: THE Pop Star 2012 singing contest is set to rock Malaysia once again come end of the month as the organisers launched nationwide auditions to seek the country's best local vocal talent.

The contest, which is conducted in the Mandarin language, is organised by New Pro-Star and co-organised by Jia Yu TV (Astro channel 304) together with the main sponsor, U Mobile Sdn Bhd.

Pop Star 2012's auditions will be held in five places, namely, Penang, Johor, Kuantan, Kuala Lumpur and Sabah, and for the first time ever, the first round of auditions will be conducted a capella.

Those who clear the first round can choose to present songs by Music Minus One or with self-prepared instrument as accompaniment.

The organiser will then pick 80 to 100 participants for the quarter-final.

Ultimately, eight finalists will be chosen to perform in the grand finale.

Jaye Lee, marketing director of New Pro-Star, said Pop Star is into its fourth year of competition and remains one of the top talent search shows in the country.

"There is so much undiscovered talent in Malaysia.

"We encourage young singers to come to the auditions to participate and stand the chance to make us proud and represent our country in Taiwan," she said.

Jeanette Lee, head of U Mobile's marketing communication and brand commercial division, said: "We are proud to continue our association with this contest which recognises and supports local talent and paves the way for them to realise their dreams."

The event will feature local judges Candy Cheah, Chong Keat Siong and Vic Teo, as well as Kay Huang from Taiwan, who will be judging the contestants during the semi-finals and the grand finale.

To add the celebrity factor, Jerome Ding and Virus Ngu, the champion and second runner-up of Pop Star 2011 respectively, will be announced as the ambassadors of Pop Star 2012 and both are representing Malaysia in The Million Star 2 TV talent competition in Taiwan.

The quarter-finals will be held on Nov 3 at LG, Concourse at Berjaya Times Square from 10am to 8pm while the semi-finals will be held the following day, also at Berjaya Times Square from 10am to 7pm.
