GOOD CAUSE:2,000 people turn up to do their bit for terminally-ill children

IT was a field day for durian lovers who had seven and a half tonnes of durians to feast on at the recent Jom Durian V.

More than 2,000 people happily tucked into the King of Fruits at the event held to raise funds for the Children's Wish Society (CWS) of Malaysia. CWS  helps to fulfil  wishes of terminally-ill children.

A total of RM113,000 was raised from this one-day event, an annual affair that saw enthusiasts converging at Subang Parade here to have their share of durians, rambutans and also mangosteen,  specially brought from orchards in Mantin, Negri Sembilan.

CWS Malaysia president, Tan Sri R.V. Navaratnam, said that corporate support and sponsorship have been overwhelming.

He said that the money raised would be channeled to fulfil the wishes of 200 terminally-ill children in every corner of the country, while raising awareness on their plight.

At the event, CWS also received financial support from Subang Jaya state assemblyman Hannah Yeoh and MCA Kelana Jaya division chairman Ong Chong Swen.

Mohd Al Hafiz Mohd Shah, 26, who came to support the event said it was a good opportunity for durian-lovers to enjoy the fruit while doing good for society.

Nik Azlan Nik Aman, 56, said it is a great way to spend some quality time with his family members and mingle around with others.

"I brought my wife and my four children and we enjoyed eating good quality durians as well as other fruits," he said.

Salvia Bhullar, 20, from Australia said this was her first time eating a durian and she had never witnessed such feasting before.

"I love the taste of durian, although I don't like its smell. I am impressed how people came together to support this charity event," she said.

The event was divided into four sessions, with 350 people per session eating as much durian as possible together for one hour at RM20 per person.
