SELAYANG: The Selayang Municipal Council plans to allocate more funds towards engaging the youths within the community.

Council president, Datuk Zainal Abidin A'ala, said organising more sports activities that were popular among the youths was the way to attract them.

"Last year, we spent RM235,000 on activities involving youths. To optimise on the funds allocated for such programmes, several zones in the municipality will pool their resources, including money and energy, and co-organise activities together instead of doing them separately,"  said Zainal, who was at the recent state budget dialogue for council level at the headquarters.

"As such, we are looking at more allocation next year. To date, we have received 24 applications for sports activities for the year."

Zainal Abidin said the dialogue revolved around the five main themes of infrastructure, social and economic development, as well as traffic congestion and water supply issues.

Gombak Health officer Dr Roslan Ishak, who was among the attendees, said it would be good to have more green areas with recreational facilities.

"More public spaces like those of Templer Park and the Forest  Research Institute Malaysia should be created. Instead of having just trees, trails and jogging tracks will allow more people to benefit from the park," said Dr Roslan.

Other suggestions recorded in the dialogue attended by village heads, non-governmental organisations, government agencies and politicians, included low-cost house financing by the state government, discount on assessment fees for disabled property owners, rezoning of land use, business and job opportunities for youth, and setting up of the council's traffic unit.

The number of complaints recorded this year up to July 23 was also highlighted during the dialogue.

The highest recorded were related to garbage collection (1,891 complaints); enforcement (952), and drainage (823), followed by stray animals (665), landscape and  trees (646) street lights (627) and road maintenance (600).

Datuk Zainal Abidin A’ala says the Council plans to have more sporting activities to attract youths.
