KEY ROLE:SP Setia Foundation donates van to ferry kidney patients to dialysis centre

SP Setia Foundation donated a 12-seater van worth RM78,500 to transport poor and disabled kidney patients to MAA Medicare for subsidised dialysis treatments.

Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the van would help cut the patients' travelling costs and time.

"We realise that the number of kidney patients have been rising significantly and they need help," Lee said.

MAA Medicare Kidney Charity Fund board of trustees member Prof Emeritus Datin Dr Norella Kong Chiew Tong said the van was the first step towards providing better service to the poor.

"Many of our patients have been coming here for 10 to 15 years. Some have lost their mobility and sight and find it difficult to come for treatment," she said.

The van pick-up service will start on Aug 31. Thirty patients from the Sungai Besi, Jalan Ipoh and Kajang branches will benefit from the service.

"One van is not sufficient for the all the patients of the three branches so only those truly in need will be given priority for now," Norella said.
