PETALING JAYA : THE former neighbourhood shopping centre, Atria, in Damansara Jaya here is now being rebuilt. In 2007, OSK Property Holdings Sdn Bhd bought the mall to redevelop it.
The project is being carried out by Atria Damansara Sdn Bhd and construction work is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
The new Atria will feature a mixed commercial development which comprises a lifestyle shopping gallery and SOFO (Small Office Flexi Office) suites.
The mall will open its doors to the public in early 2014 while the suites by 2015.
OSK Public Relations and Communications assistant manager Emily Cheng Siow Chun said the redevelopment project will give the mall a look that would suit the current lifestyle.
"Damansara Jaya is one of the most affluent places in Petaling Jaya. Atria was once a popular haunt in the neighbourhood," said Cheng.
"When shopping malls such as 1 Utama and Tropicana came into the picture, Atria began losing its appeal.
"However, we felt the area has potential because everything here is within walking distance or a short drive away. So, we (OSK) decided to redevelop the old Atria to cater to the needs of the public," she said.
The estimated cost of the project is over RM300 million and all the office units have been sold, said Cheng.
Initially, the redevelopment project included constructing a 33-storey building but it was scaled down to 22 storeys due to protest from the residents, who said that it would worsen the traffic condition there.
"The good thing about this is that whenever there is any kind of development, the property value in the neighbourhood would increase," said Cheng.
"We hope the residents of Damansara Jaya will see this as a positive thing," she said.
Meanwhile, the Damansara Jaya Residents and Owners Association (DJROA) president Datuk Yew Cheng Hoe claimed that though the mall was demolished a year ago, they have yet to receive any updates as promised by the developer.
He said as long as the redevelopment project remains at a moderate level, the DJROA has no objections.
With its retail space of between 38.7 sq m and 120.9 sq m, the mall offers the latest in haute couture, entertainment, electronics, digital media and household products. There will also be 1,900 parking bays.
The SOFO suites are designed to provide working professionals a home with a prestigious address and modern amenities. There are 392 freehold units in the twin SOFO towers.
Among the facilities are an infinity lap pool, jacuzzi, a meditation terrace, meeting rooms with video conference, gymnasium, sauna room, a WI-FI zone and a foot reflexology path.
