KUALA LUMPUR: Not many people know the man behind the name Jalan Yap Tai Chi.
Born in 1883, Yap Tai Chi was educated in China and also at Raffles Institution in Singapore.
He was the fourth son of Yap Kwan Seng, the last Chinese kapitan of Kuala Lumpur.
He started a timber business in 1908 in Kuala Lumpur and later founded the firm of Chi and Company, Kuala Lumpur.
The timber trader was also a public official. He was a member of the Kuala Lumpur Sanitary Board, Chinese Advisory Board (1921), Chinese Relief Committee (1921) and Board of Visiting Justice.
He also organised the Selangor Anti-Opium Society, of which he was the secretary.
In addition, he was president of the Yap Clan Association as well as a number of other Chinese associations.
Jalan Yap Tai Chi is located in close proximity with The Westin Kuala Lumpur, Ritz Carlton Residences and Dorsett Regency Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
