GEORGE TOWN: The Bayan Baru Umno Division today claimed to have obtained a police permit to hold a 1Malaysia people's lunch to be attended by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at Persiaran Mahsuri, Bayan Baru, here tomorrow.
The division's information chief, Datuk Ridzuan Bakar, said the question of illegal erection of the canopy and blocking of the road did not arise.
"The erection of the canopy began yesterday and we face no problem from the people here because we have made provisions for an alternative route for them.
"They (the state government) have attempted to foil the one-day visit of the deputy prime minister to Penang by accusing us of not obtaining a permit for the function and claiming that the erection of the canopy disrupts traffic flow," he told reporters here.
Earlier, a war of words broke out at the site when Batu Maung state assemblyman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim and Pantai Jerejak state assemblyman Sim Tze Tzin claimed that the erection of the canopy was illegal as it did not have the approval of the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP).
Ridzuan, who is also chairman of the 1Malaysia People's Lunch Committee, said the two Pakatan elected representatives had scolded workers arranging the tables and chairs for the event.
The two assemblymen left after stating that the MPPP could not be blamed if the canopy was taken down because it was put up without its approval.
About 7,000 people are expected at the lunch where the deputy prime minister will hand over the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) of RM500 each and a RM200 aid for fishermen. -- BERNAMA
