PONTIAN: Some 10,000 people thronged the final day of a health carnival held in conjunction with a district-level Malaysia Day celebration in Pontian.
The event at Stadium Mini Pontian recently had various activities, including a 50km bicycle ride, an aerobic exercise session, a health exhibition, performance by Datuk M. Nasir, zapin dance, and lucky draw.
Pontian district officer Muji Salimon said unhealthy living and stress had contributed to illnesses.
"The medical expenses of hypertension, diabetes, stroke, cancer and non-communicable diseases' medical expenses had cost the country dearly," said Muji.
He said the number of people with diabetes, hypertension and heart diseases had risen in 1996, 2006 and last year.
The event was officiated by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Ahmad Maslan.
Ahmad, who is also Pontian MP, said the carnival was carried out by the Health Ministry with help from the media.
He said government policy is to advocate a healthy lifestyle among people.
