MONTH-LONG EVENT:he festivities will be held at the Johor Baru Arts Festival Village in Bukit Timbalan from Sept 1
EIGHTY performances, four art exhibitions, four competitive events, seven workshops and loads of other fun activities are lined up for the month-long 9th Johor Baru Arts Festival.
The event, organised by The Johor Society for Performing Arts, will be held from Sept 1 to 29 at the JB Arts Festival Village in the grounds of the Sultan Ibrahim Building, Bukit Timbalan.
Some events will be held at Danga Bay, Johor Baru Indoor Stadium and Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk.
There will be performances by Sri Lankan dancers, Canadian electronic musicians and students of KDU University College's School of Communication & Creative Arts.
The annual event is under the patronage of Johor Baru member of parliament Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad.
The main sponsors are Iskandar Malaysia and the JB Parliamentary Office.
Shahrir said the festival would inject more life and soul into Johor Baru and played an important role in establishing its profile as a developed city.
"Becoming a developed city means more than just having buildings, skyscrapers and infrastructure. Residents must also develop an appreciation for the finer things in life, such as culture and the arts," said Shahrir.
He urged the public to support the festival by attending shows and taking part in workshops and fun activities.
"The JB Arts Festival has such a diverse array of performances. We believe that everybody can appreciate the arts. This ties in with this year's slogan --'This is not just a festival, this is who we are'."
Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) chief executive Datuk Ismail Ibrahim said the festival was organised by people who were passionate about the arts.
"We support the JB Arts Festival because appreciation of the arts is part of Iskandar Malaysia's economic and social development. It is not only about bringing in investors but also involves improving the quality of life," he said.
"The fest is putting Johor Baru on the world map. Irda is pleased to be involved in the arts fest this year and in the years to come."
