POPULAR: Iskandar Regional Development Authority to display the ‘bubu’ at the Legoland theme park

THE bubu or fish traps are getting more popular, especially those  produced   by fishermen in Kampung Sungai Melayu here, who are earning a lucrative side income from the trade.

Iskandar Regional Development Authority will be giving the cottage industry a boost when the bubu is displayed at the Legoland theme park.

Kampung Sungai Melayu village chief Pandak Ahmad said the craft became popular under the Johor grass-root innovation trail programme, which was introduced in the districts of Johor Baru, Batu Pahat and Kota Tinggi.

"Bubu craft is a Malay heritage.  It showcases the creativity of the fishermen," he said.

Shafie Jais, 45, a bubu  collector, said that although  bubu are usually large, an experienced craftsman  could make  smaller ones as souvenirs.

"This is what innovation is all about," Shafie said.

The programme has the support of the Johor Baru City Council, which is helping to commercialise the product.
