MEMBERSHIP:The new Johor Designer Association, a platform for local designers to exchange ideas, is recruiting members

THE Johor Designer Association, set up less than a month ago, is looking for designers to join them.

The association aims to provide a platform for local designers to meet and exchange ideas.

Currently, the association has 80 members and is headed by the chairman, Zuraidah Zarith Ahmad.

"We also want to  promote  Johor designers,  especially those in the fashion industry, on the international scene.  We believe Johor has a pool of designers and models who are  talented but poorly paid.

"We hope that by the end of the year, a local designer can take part in an event, say, in Singapore.

"We don't see why Johor can't produce another designer like Jimmy Choo who has made it big in the international scene," she said.

Zuraidah said the association welcomes designers from various industries.

They can be interior designers, make-up artists, models, fashion designers or web designers.

"At the moment, our focus is on the fashion industry.  Having an association like this can benefit consumers as well.

"For example, when someone wants to engage a make-up artist,  he or she can call the association to get more details about the make-up artist.

"The association will also conduct apprentice programmes for students during the school holidays so that they can gain more exposure and experience," she said.

The association is currently  undertaking a model search. It recently held a selection round at the Plaza Angana in Johor Baru.

Most of the participants who turned up were new and aspiring models.

"We will select only the best of these models for Tunku Aminah Sultan Ibrahim, the daughter of the Sultan of Johor who is the patron of the association, to handpick her favourites to enter the upcoming competition," said  Zuraidah, adding that the princess is very passionate about the fashion industry.

The association offers two kinds of membership  --  the premium and  ordinary memberships.

The premium membership is open exclusively to those who are known for their creativity in their fields.
