MUAR: Ninety-eight per cent of accidents in the district are due to the careless handling of vehicles and lackadaisical attitude of drivers.

Muar public order and traffic chief ASP Suhaimi Ahmad said some motorists and motorcyclists had failed to abide by road safety and traffic regulations.

"In many cases, accidents occurred  when  drivers beat the traffic lights," he said at the opening of the Shell Carnival at a petrol station in Bukit Pasir, near here, recently.

Suhaimi said Muar Traffic had identified accident-prone hotspots in federal and state roads here.

Among the hotspots were Jalan Muar-Bukit Pasir, Jalan Muar-Bukit Kepong, Jalan Temenggong Ahmad, Jalan Muar-Parit Jawa , Jalan Muar-Parit Sulong, and Jalan Bukit Pasir-Pagoh.

Suhaimi said drivers  should take  precautions to avoid endangering themselves and other road users.

He noted that those who had committed traffic offences could pay fines, but they could not bring back  lives that were lost because of road accidents.

Suhaimi advised drivers  to put on seat belts and motorcyclists to wear helmets to protect themselves.

He also urged them to stop  to help accident victims.

The Shell Carnival was launched by sales and marketing company indirect channel general manager Au Tong Sing, indirect channel global brand manager Seow Lee Ming,  Bukit Pasir Shell Filling Station Sdn Bhd owner Lim Ka Chon and Shell Malaysia staff.

Fun family activities were held to introduce Shell Rimula R5 LE and Shell Rimula R6 LM products nationwide.

Au said the Bukit Pasir Shell Filling Station Sdn Bhd was established in 1957, and was chosen for the fifth stop in Peninsula Malaysia because it was the biggest Shell lubricants distributor in the southern region.

He said Shell had picked nine stops, five in Peninsula Malaysia and four in East Malaysia, added that its mobile truck had travelled nationwide since June 19 to introduce the two new products and the programme would end next month.

Au said the one-day Shell Carnival here was unique as it provided free hair cuts, a fun pool-table challenge and 10 lucky customers could win the  chance to watch the fastest trucks compete in the 2012 European Truck Racing Championship Finals at Le Mans, France.

He said the contest would end on Aug 31.
