DESPERATE:An elderly man and his wife, living in a dilapidated house, without piped water, are in need of urgent help

AN elderly couple in Taman Sri Lalang is appealing to the authorities for a house under the hard-core poor housing scheme programme.

Labourer Atan Kemat, 77, and wife Sapiah Gumeri, 84, have been living in a dilapidated home in Jalan Sekolah Cina for over 40 years.

The couple also has to make do with murky water as they rely on  a well for their daily supply.

The monthly stipends from both the Welfare Department and Baitul Mal are not enough for the couple.

"I have been applying for a new home under the scheme for three years now. My two children are  married and have families of their own. They live nearby but cannot help us much since they are also poor," said Atan.

The owners of JanSal Enterprise, Ahmad Jani Melan and Roslan Ariffin, who visited the couple to present them with some necessities, were concerned about the elderly couple and the hardship they have had to endure.

The company learnt about their plight from the couple's neighbours, when they were visiting the residential area to find families in need of assistance as part of their company's corporate social responsibility.

"It is heartbreaking to see them living in such conditions.

"Hopefully, we will be able to help them."
