    Fireworks worth RM18,440 seized since Aug 8

    JOHOR BARU: Twenty-seven people have been detained for selling and possessing firecrackers worth a total of RM18,440 since the launch of the state "Ops Letup Raya" on Aug 8.

      Johor Customs director Datuk Ramli Johari said the excise duty of the seized firecrackers was about RM12,400.

      "Most of the seizures were made in Johor Baru. The suspects are being investigated under Section 135 of the Customs Act 1967. We will continue with our operation against such illegal activities," he told reporters at Menara Kastam recently.

      Meanwhile, Johor Customs seized RM600,000 worth of contraband cigarettes and liquor with excise duty totalling RM1.5 million in three seperate cases from Aug 6 to 12.

      "Five people aged from 27 to 37 were detained in connection with the cases, which are being investigated under the same act.

      "We appeal to the public to tip us off with information about the sale of contraband or prohibited goods. Your identity will be kept confidential. On top of that, all informants will be rewarded with cash," he said.
