JOHOR BARU: Quick action by firemen saved a house from being destroyed by fire in Jalan Permata 3 in Taman Permata, near Kampung Sungai Danga here, on Thursday night.

Neighbours had alerted the Johor Baru Fire Department upon seeing smoke coming out of the two-storey semi-detached house at about 8.10pm.

Three fire engines and an emergency medical service ambulance, led by Fire Department operations commander Jamalludin Jaafar, were at the scene within minutes of the distress call.

By 9pm, a large crowd had gathered outside the house where firemen were extinguishing the fire.

Personnel from the Taman Perling police station were also there to cordon off the scene.

A spokesman from the Johor Baru Fire Department said they received a distress call at 8.19pm.

"All 13 firemen were sent to the scene and there were no reported casualties," he said, adding that the blaze was under control within 30 minutes.

The spokesman said the Fire Department had started investigations to determine the cause of the fire.

A check revealed that part of the house was damaged from the fire believed to have started in the kitchen.

It is learnt that the homeowners, who are from Indonesia, were overseas at the time of the incident.
