STATE OF EXCITEMENT: Festivities include dazzling cultural performances on the eve of Aug 31
 JOHOR BAHRU: THE state-level celebration of the 55th Merdeka Day will be held in Kluang Mall, Kluang, on Aug 31.
  A tahlil and prayer ceremony (doa selamat), attended by Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, will be held at Bandar Segamat Mosque at 8pm the night before.
 An hour later, a live cultural show will be staged at Dataran Segamat. The representatives of 11 sub-districts in Segamat are expected to put up dazzling demonstrations of Malay traditional dances, the lion dance and the silambam martial art.
 On Aug 31, colourful marching parades by various state and federal government agencies will make their way to the Kluang Mall at 8am.
 The event will be opened with the hoisting of the Jalur Gemilang, accompanied by the singing of the national anthem by the SMK Sultan Abdul Jalil choir team.
 The national pledge will be led by 55 students.
 That will be followed by a marching parade by the Civil Defence Department and youth organisations Kontinjen Belia Cergas and Kontinjen Belia Arena Sukan.
 There will also be a "Janji Ditepati" march by the Home Ministry, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Education Ministry and Finance Ministry among others.
 A demonstration by the armed forces and several marching parades by a special unit from the Fire and Rescue Department, the state military force and the prisons department are also scheduled.
 Brass band performances and a cultural show by Yayasan Warisan Johor will also take place.
 The run-up to the Merdeka celebration which began in July 17 will end on Malaysia Day on Sept 16.
