1MALAYSIA SPIRIT: Club is a specialised organisation that takes care of pensioners’ welfare

JOHOR BARU: MORE than 300 guests attended the 1Malaysia Government Pensioners Club's (Kupekmas) Hari Raya  open house celebrations held at JB Catering restaurant here last weekend.

The open house  was the first major event hosted by Johor's Kupekmas chapter since it was formed in April this year.

Those who attended were mainly former civil servants who had served under the Johor and Federal   governments.

Also present were national-level Kupekmas deputy president Md Akhir Manshor, secretary-general Datuk Abd Rahman Manan and also Johor chapter pro-tem chairman Ismail Ahmad.

Ismail, a former retired policeman, said the event was a good start for the club and it received positive response from many former civil servants.

"We aim to get more  former civil servants who had worked under the various government agencies or even departments in Johor to join as members.

"Kupekmas acts as a specialised organisation to take care of  pensioners' welfare," he said recently.

Kupekmas was formerly known as the Umno Retirees Club (Perfunctory Group) of the government of Malaysia.

Although the club's name was changed, it would continue to cooperate with the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public Service (Cuepacs) in the interest and welfare of pensioners.

With the name change, Ismail said the club now welcomes all former civil servants, irrespective of their race to join it.

He said this was important as the club would now not be associated with politics and its membership reflects the  1Malaysia spirit.

The club aims to have 50,000 members nationwide by year-end.

Pensioners who are interested to join Kupekmas Johor chapter can call Ismail at 012-728 0011 or the clubs pro-tem committee members at 012-753 0922 (Othman Yusof) or 019-755 8121 (Ismail Mohamed).
