DANGER AHEAD:Gaps in the drains leave residents concerned as they pose a danger to children and vehicles

RESIDENTS along Jalan Setia 1/2 to Jalan Setia 1/11 in Taman Setia Indah in Johor Baru are annoyed with the theft of metal drain covers in the area that have escalated recently.

The thefts are believed to have occurred during the day when most of the residents are out working.

Some residents claim to have seen a  white van circling the area before discovering covers  missing.  Residents believe that the covers were stolen and sold to scrap metal dealers in order to make a quick buck, considering the current high price of metal.

Resident Hew Kin Foo, 32, said although the drain is not that deep, it still poses a danger to the residents, especially children.

The gaps  could cause damage to vehicles.

"There have been cases of children being injured after falling into the drain while  playing outside."

A resident, who wants to be identified as Razali, hopes that the Johor Baru City Council would replace the covers soon for the safety of the residents.

"They should replace the covers with  concrete slabs to put and end to the thefts.

"It is also a cheaper option," he added.
