PONTIAN: About 234 students of SK Serkat here carried a 350m long banner, which consisted of 220 pieces of Jalur Gemilang which had been stitched together, during a procession to mark Teachers Day celebrations.

The gesture was  intended to symbolise the good relationship between students, teachers, parents and the local community, and the  patriotic spirit.  It took them five days  to put the 220  national flags together.

The procession began with parents and teachers walking a 4km route from the school to the Kukup Resort in Tanjung Piai. The drizzle did not dampen the spirits of the participants.

Also present were Kukup state assemblyman Datuk Md Othman Yusof, SK Serkat headmaster A. Rashid Omar, the school's Parent-Teacher Association president Zahrul Moez and trainees from the Penerok Community Rehabilitation Centre.

Rashid  thanked  participants for helping to make the programme a reality and praised them for remaining jovial despite the  rain.

Pontian District Education Office (PPD) representative Nazarali Ali said the school's management and  teachers deserved praise for creating the Jalur Gemilang banner.

He said it was a unique effort as it had   involved disabled individuals from PDK and strengthened ties between the  members of the community.
