NABBED:Plumber sold more than 30 stolen water meters to secondhand shop owner

THE mystery behind the disappearance of more than 30 water meters installed by SAJ Holdings Sdn Bhd in Kluang since the beginning of the month has been solved with the arrest of a plumber.

The 36-year-old man used his skills in repairing pipes and water meter installation to remove the water meters placed outside houses and shophouses in the town of Kluang.

The man took only about a minute to remove a water meter from its location.

Kluang police, which set up a special task force to investigate the theft of water meters, soon identified the suspect based on information gathered from residents.

Kluang district police chief ACP  Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said the plumber and another man, believed to be his fence, were nabbed at about 5am recently.

"The plumber was selling the stolen items to a 60-year-old man, who operates a shop selling used items at the fringe of town.

"Following the arrest of the two men, police seized a bag with 13  water meters."

He also said with the arrest, police believe they have solved the case of more than 30 missing water meters since the beginning of the year.

Abdul Majid also warned secondhand  dealers not to buy stolen goods as they, too, will be charged with possession of stolen properties.
