PONTIAN: More than 800 buildings in Pekan Nanas and Pontian towns will receive a new coat of paint for the World Islamic Economic Forum to be held in Johor in December.

Pontian District Council chairman Miswan Yunus said some building looked worn and were even covered in moss.

The owners of the buildings have been told to participate in the programme to beautify the towns.

"We are carrying out the programme in phases, starting with the trading premises along the route to be travelled by visiting dignitaries," said Miswan.

He said the owners had until Oct 15 to paint their buildings. They can appoint their  own contractors or hire the ones appointed by the council for the job.

"The colour will be fixed by the council and the costs borne by the owner.

"Buildings painted in corporate colours do not have to go with the council's colour selection."

He said owners who had repainted their buildings as recently as up to three years ago and had documented proof of it to show did not have to participate in the programme.
