RECKLESS BIKERS: Adults and students ride without helmets in Kota Masai 2

JOHOR BARU: Students at a secondary school  near Pasir Gudang are risking their lives and those  of others  by not wearing  helmets while riding their motorcycles.

On a recent visit to Kota Masai 2, Streets saw  more than 20 students riding  without their headgear.

When classes were over at 1pm on a Monday afternoon, the  students were seen riding, alone or with pillion riders, without any crash helmets.

Residents in the area were seen riding without helmets too. Some had more than one person riding pillion with them.

A hardware store owner, who declined to be named, said there had been several accidents.

"Kota Masai 2 is a relatively new housing area," he said.

"Since the  school opened  two years ago, the housing estate has  developed. However, the mentality of the people, unfortunately, has not.

"We cannot blame the youngsters alone when the adults themselves  are  setting a bad example," he added.

"What is  worse is when the adults are also seen ferrying toddlers who do not wear any protective gear."

A kuih trader, who also declined to be identified, said  there  were two accidents involving student motorcyclists last week.

"The authorities should conduct regular traffic operations  to nab errant riders," he said.
