JOHOR BARU: A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was recently signed for the opening of the Swiftlet South Garden at Bio Desaru in Tanjung Sedili.
The project, a joint venture between Swiftlet Garden Sdn Bhd and Bio Desaru Sdn Bhd, a Johor state government project, was declared open by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.
Institute of Bioproduct Development (IBD) spokesman Dr Lee Ting Hun said in a statement that the core business of the company is farm development.
Other activities include swiftlet ranching tourism, edible bird's nest processing, edible bird's nest product research and development and edible bird's nest specialty chain store manufacturing of edible bird's nest products.
Lee said the first phase of the development, spreading two hectares, was launched last month.
It comprises 49 units of swiftlet houses, a tourism and exhibition centre, a processing centre for bird's nest and a factory for the manufacture and packaging of the product.
The phase is currently 50 per cent completed and is expected to be handed over by the end of the year.
The MOU was signed between Swiftlet South Garden and the IBD, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia to carry out Research, Development and Commercialization (R&DC) of the development of edible bird's nest based products.
IBD director Prof Ramlan Abdul Aziz, UTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaini Ujang and Swiftlet Garden chairman Datuk Seri Abdullah Fadzil Che Wan represented IBD, UTM and Swiftlet Garden respectively.
Also present was Swiftlet Garden executive director, Eric P. S. Shak.
Lee further said that the MOU addresses the issue of a collaboration on research and development that includes the development of Edible Bird's Nest (EBN) extraction for nutraceutical and cosmeticeutical products.
"EBN Extract is a scientifically-discovered nutrient-rich extracted from best quality genuine Edible Bird's Nest by using biotechnology method.
"The extract contains glycol-proteins, peptides and bio-minerals, strengthening the functions of internal organs and stimulates cell-mediated immunity in human."
He also said that EBN extract can be further formulated into a wide series of functional food and beverages that help to strengthen the immune system, rejuvenate complexion, smoothen skin, maintain youthfulness, prevent wrinkles and are able to balance the anabolic and catabolic mechanism in the cartilage to prevent joint diseases.
"The range of EBN cosmeticeutical products contains water-soluble amino acids which help to moisturise and penetrate the skin for skin healing, building of skin cells and stop the formation of wrinkles," he added. "This will serve to maintain a youthful and radiant-looking skin."
