    VAT99 taskforce set up to combat crime

    PROACTIVE: 99 plainclothes policemen will patrol strategic places in the city

       JOHOR BARU: THE Johor Baru South police have set up the VAT99 taskforce as a proactive measure to curb  crime in the district.  District police chief ACP Zainuddin Yaacob said VAT99 comprises of  99 plainclothes policemen who will be based in  crime hot spots.

      "We adopt a different approach in our  latest effort to prevent  street crime.

      "The  men will be stationed in strategic locations such as the central business district, Taman Pelangi and Permas. This will enable us to take swift action whenever there is a crime.

      "Though the men are in plainclothes,  they may at times put on a jacket to let the public know that they are on duty," he said.

      Zainuddin said the district police had conducted 1,485 raids on illegal gaming machine outlets, family entertainment outlets and brothels since January this year.

      Of the raids, 681 were carried out on illegal gaming machine outlets  with 326 people arrested and 5,129  computers seized.

      "At family entertainment outlets, we conducted a total of 105 raids and arrested 53 suspects  in gambling activities. We  also seized 196 gaming machines," he added.

      A total of 699 raids were carried out on premises suspected to be involved in  prostitution and immoral activities with  305 foreigners and locals arrested.
