PONTIAN: Peninsula Malaysia Village Headman Union (KPPSM) wants its members' grades to be reviewed, calling for an upgrade from their present grading.

The union currently has 758 members in Peninsula Malaysia in grades such as NP32, 36 and also 40.

KPPSM president, Mohd Fuad Zainal Abidin, said the review for an upgrade was due to the fact that the headmen were also public officers and have higher responsibilities today.

"I will bring the requests by the union to prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak next month," he said at the recent 37th Johor branch KPPSM annual meeting that was officiated by the deputy minister from Prime Minister Department, Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

Also present were chief assistant district officer, Mohd Zaid A. Rahman, KPPSM chairman Mohd Safie Amat and his deputy, Ali Affendi Zainal.

Mohd Fuad said  he will try to fulfil the members' requests by raising the service grade of the headmen, including their salary.

Meanwhile, Ahmad asked in his speech for full support from the headmen on government policies and providing better services.

He added that the role of the headman is an important institution for the government as a medium in delivering message to their citizens.
