KULAIJAYA: The Kulaijaya Welfare Department here in Johor Baru, donated grocery items to five senior citizens here under its Home Help programme.

The department's officer Mohd Iskandar Abu Bakar said the initiative is a joint venture with Tesco Hypermarket where senior citizens staying alone in the district are given  daily essentials to ease their burden.

Iskandar said the five senior citizens aged between 60 and 80, were roped into the programme as they were staying alone after their  spouses died and their children could not be contacted.

"They have a roof over their heads, but helping out with daily essentials will ensure that they  have proper meals," he said.

He added that though alone, the senior citizens were able to take care of themselves and wanted to stay at their respective homes.

Bukit Permai assemblyman Kamarulzaman Ali also handed out personal donations which left a smile on the  senior citizens faces.

The programme involved three villages in the district -- Sungai Besoi Murni Jaya, Sri Muar Murni and Felda Bukit Permai.

Tesco Stores Malaysia Sdn Bhd human resources manager Kamarudin Jaafar said  the visit and contributions were part of the corporation's "Volunteer Hour" corporate social responsibility.
