NATIONAL SPIRIT: The Health Ministry’s 10,000 Steps Merdeka Walk programme attracts 1,400 health-conscious participants
SERI MANJUNG: THE Manjung health office recently organised the 10,000 Steps Merdeka Walk programme simultaneously with the nationwide health campaign.
About 1,400 participants walked 6.5km while waving the Jalur Gemilang and singing patriotic songs.
They also received a goodie bag and certificate of participation each.
The Community Union Health Exploration Carnival was organised by the Health Ministry in conjunction with Merdeka Day celebrations at the Manjung Municipal Council mini-stadium complex here. There was also an exhibition.
State Local Government, Health, Environment, Transport and non-Muslim Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon led the participants on the walk.
Joining them were state health director Datuk Dr Nordiyanah Hassan and deputy director (public health) Datin Dr Rangit Kaur.
Also present were Hospital Manjung director Dr Tan Poey Chin and Dr Yeoh Soo Fan. The latter represented Manjung district health officer Dr Ling He Mey.
Dr Nordiyanah and Dr Mah spoke on the adverse effects of poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking and alcohol.
Dr Mah also mentioned the emergence of tuberculosis (TB), although not alarming, but still needed to be checked before it becomes widespread.
He also toured over 20 exhibition booths which displayed various products and health screenings.
SM Nan Hwa Sitiawan students provided entertainment with their performances of patriotic songs.
Prizes were also presented to the top three winners of the best breakfast preparation contest.
