SUNGAI PETANI: Thirteen fishermen were arrested for using the banned pukat rawa sorong (drag nets) off Tanjung Dawai near here recently.

Langkawi Maritime District One enforcement chief, Capt (M) Abdul Rahim Abdullah said the fishermen, aged between 20 and 40, were earlier spotted casting their nets between 370m and 2.8km from the beach about 1am.

He said the suspects, in six boats, tried to flee when his men approached them but they were caught after a short chase.

On the way back to their base, the enforcement team caught another fisherman using drag nets near Kuala Sala.

The fishermen are expected to be charged under the Fisheries Act, 1985.

They may face fines up to RM20,000 each and two years' jail or both upon conviction.

Pukat rawa sorong was banned several years ago after it was found to be destructive to the habitat of most marine lives.
