BALIK PULAU: A Toy library has opened here in  Balik Pulau. More than 300 children screamed with excitement when they stepped into the library for the first time recently.

The library, which is inside the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) building, boasts a variety of new and refurbished toys for the young and young-at-heart.

The library, the 17th of its kind in Penang, is an initiative of the Penang Toys Stories project spearheaded by Sim Children & Child Heart Clinic and Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara (an organisation for the wives of Penang's elected representatives and women elected representatives).

State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow, who launched the library, said it would be very beneficial to the development of children.

"Kids these days are addicted to electronic gadgets. They let their childhood pass by without actual toys to play with," he said.

The launch was organised by the Leo Club of SMJK Sacred Heart. The children took part in a jigsaw puzzle contest.

Seafood product supplier PacificWest donated 1,200 packets of tempura fish fillets and prawn twisters which were then cooked by Segi CollegePenang hospitality students for the children.

The library is open on Wednesdays (3.30pm to 6pm), Saturdays (1.30pm to 4.30pm) and Sundays (10.30am to 1.30pm). Admission is free.

To donate toys to the library, call Au Yong Hui Nee at 019-448 2622.
