IPOH: THE Ipoh Orchid Society (IOS) is holding a national-level Orchid Exhibition and Promotion at Tesco Extra (Bercham). The fair ends on Sunday.

The event is being held in conjunction with Hari Raya and Hari Malaysia and opens from 9am to 9pm.

The floriculture show comprises 20 sales booths with 10 commercial growers selling their products from RM5 per plant onwards.

There are 1,500 types of plants. They include ornamental plants, herbs, fruit trees and bonsai. There are also 100,000 orchid pots.

The society had also launched a new orchid named Dendrobium Hari Malaysia 49, which is a cross between Den. Udom Sri Redscarlet and Den. Midnight Velvet.

Another new orchid on exhibit is the Kagawara Diinesh Gold, a cross between Ren. Khalsom and Ascd. Mdm. Kenny.

The orchid was created by B. Diinesh Nathan, 14, who started growing orchids two years ago.

Guest-of-honour was former Ipoh Mayor Datuk Mohamad Rafiai Moktar.

IOS secretary S. Rajah said the objective of the event was to promote growing orchids as a hobby for all ages.

"We are planning to organise a grand orchid show in Cameron Highlands by the end of the year.

"Besides, we have already started an Orchid Garden in SRK (T) Ringlet to teach students on gardening, which forms part of an environmental subject," said Rajah.

He hopes to start a 1Malaysia Orchid Association after getting the consent of the five million orchid growers soon.

IOS was incepted in 1987 and has since received a total of seven million visitors to its annual orchid show. For details, call 012-508 3642.
