THOUSANDS of people recently thronged the Seventh Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital's Charity Food and Fun Fair.

GEORGE TOWN: Called "Chin Ho Chiak Food and Fun Fair 2012", the biennial event was held to raise funds for the hospital's Needy Cancer Patient Fund.

There were more than 100 stalls selling local fare and international cuisine, as well as handicraft.

Some stalls were set up by well-known eateries, societies, hotels and individuals.

Hospital CEO Tham Wei Wei said the fair sought to raise RM550,000 through the proceeds of the stalls and donations from the public.

"The hospital needs the support of the public, well-wishers, corporations and benefactors to achieve the targeted amount.

"It is an event for the entire family and people of all ages to have fun and enjoy the culinary fare and entertainment," he said.

Tham said the fair had been growing steadily over the years, with more stalls and visitors.

Officials said about RM1.4mil had been collected through the fair since it was held in 2000.

Streams of visitors queued at the stalls, while others enjoyed their meals at tables set up under the canopy.

Visitors were treated to stage performances, including a baba and nyonya show, belly dancing, kung fu martial arts demonstration and drumming.

Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu said it was heartening to see so much public support for the hospital.
