THE Kedah Health Department has seized over 3,000 illegal sex supplements and weight-loss products worth about RM350,000 in three operations in the state.
ALOR STAR: Acting on complaints, the department's pharmaceutical services division conducted a three-month long surveillance before raiding a factory in Sungai Petani near here on Monday.
More than 1,000 sachets of coffee containing drugs to improve male sex performance, worth about RM110,000, were seized from the factory.
Spot tests on samples showed that the products contained drugs classified as scheduled poison.
State pharmaceutical services enforcement division senior principal assistant director Mokhtar Abdullah said the coffee contained sildenafil, more commonly known by the brand name Viagra.
"Taking sildenafil without a doctor's prescription could lead to blindness and heart attacks," he told reporters.
The 60-member raiding party comprised officers from Kedah, Penang, Perlis and Putrajaya.
On the same day, another team raided a factory in Napoh, near here and seized more than 1,000 bottles of sildenafil capsules, worth about RM40,000.
A third team seized more than 1,000 illegal sex supplements and weight-loss products from 13 traders at Pekan Rabu and a trader at a nearby bazaar.
Among the contraband seized from the traders were "aphrodisiacal" in nature under brands such as Maajun Dua Istimewa, Mixagrip, Magic Power, Gali Gali and Jantan.
Mokhtar said all confiscated items would be sent to the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau for further tests pending legal action.
He said traders selling the contraband were liable to a maximum RM25,000 fine or three years' jail or both upon conviction.
Companies found guilty of violating regulations face fines up to RM50,000.
