TREE’S COMPANY: Students carpool to Bougainvillea Park to hug a tree
IPOH: OLYMPIA College Ipoh is counted among those with a growing awareness of Earth Hour.
The college observed Earth Hour by switching off lights half an hour earlier than the specified time to emphasise its commitment to preserving the environment.
"Each year, the college has a theme besides switching off. One year (the theme) was donating trees to secondary schools to be planted. Another was getting students to bring all empty cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and old newspapers and magazines for recycling," said principal Cindy Chong.
She added that this year, 20 Olympia College Ipoh students car-pooled to Bougainvillea Park to hug a tree. The significance of hugging a tree is to "Love a Tree, Love Our Children's Future".
The college is a strong supporter of the green movement and is committed to educating the youth on how they can do their bit for the environment.
"Everyone can do their part by bringing a recyclable bag when going shopping instead of using plastic bags," said Chong.
Some of the green practices adopted by the college include switching off lights and other electrical equipment when they are not in use because every little bit helps.
Since 2008, Olympia College Ipoh has initiated the "going green" campaign by reducing waste, recycling paper and plastic bottles and switching off lights in classrooms that are not in use.
