ALOR STAR: Sharifah Intan Zaharah Syed Hamid lost her home in a fire on Sunday but is relieved that her family is safe.

"Everything went up in smoke in a matter of minutes," said the 43-year-old housewife.

"However, I am glad that my five children and husband are safe."

Sharifah Intan's double-storey wooden house was destroyed in the 11pm incident.

Damages from the fire, which included her motorcycle and a car, was estimated at about RM100,000.

Since the fire, she and her family have been staying at one of her siblings' houses.

State Welfare Department director Zulkiply Ramli said the family had been provided with basic necessities, including food items.

He said the department was considering other forms of aid, including cash.

Neighbours and friends have also given cash and other help to the family.

The latest to come to their aid was dR Rozmey Group founder Datuk Dr Che Rozmey Che Din who donated RM3,000 to the family.
