IPOH: THE Perak Footwear Industry Association is aiming for 200 entries for its Malaysia Footwear Design Competition next year. Its president Low Heng Keat said 123 entries were received for this year's competition, which was organised by the Malaysian Footwear Manufacturers Association.

"As the competition gains recognition, more participants will be interested to take part," he said. The competition has been an annual event since its launch in 1996. Vinky Ho received the grand prize in this year's International Footwear Design Competition, which was held in Guangzhou, China.

Malaysians also took the second prize in the Men's Wear category, the third prize in the Ladies' Trendy Wear category, and the second prize in the Ladies' Boots category.

Malaysia presented 20 pairs of shoes in the competition on May 30. Low said winners of the upcoming competition will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the International Footwear Design Competition in Guangzhou, China, also in May next year.

The association's committee member M.K. Soon said fashion designers and artists would be invited to judge the entries.

"The award presentation will be held on May 4 next year at the Kinta Riverfront Hotel," said Soon.

The competition is now open for submissions from those aged 16 and above.

"Interested participants can go to our website, www.malaysiashoes.my, to download the entry forms," said Soon, adding that the forms will also be available at some institutes of higher learning.

The Men's and Ladies' Shoes are the two categories of the competition.

The top three winners of both categories will walk away with RM5,000, RM2,500 and RM1,500 respectively, in addition to a trophy and certificate.

There will also be five Most Promising Entry awards, which offer cash prizes of RM1,000 each. The closing date for submissions is Oct 31.
