    Jennifer Liau’s on a roll

CHESTNUT puree, green tea cream cheese, and wild wolfberry are some of the exotic Swiss roll flavours at JJ Cakes & Swiss Rolls in Jalan Chung Thye Phin here.

IPOH: The outlet, which opened five years ago, offers more than 30 flavours including black sesame, pink dragon, prune, pumpkin, spinach, carrot cream cheese, cempedak and durian.

And to top it all, there are no added preservatives, or artificial colouring and flavours.

Owner Jennifer Liau makes sure that the ingredients used are fresh, low in sugar and devoid of food additives.

"The idea is to offer a healthy option for people with a sweet tooth," said the self-confessed cake lover.

The 61-year-old mother of three said the Swiss rolls and cakes in her shop are freshly baked every day.

"There are no expiry dates for our products, which must be kept refrigerated to retain their freshness.

"Since there are no preservatives, they can only last for up to a week if they are kept in the fridge.

"Cakes and rolls that are not sold by the second day are usually taken off the shelves.

"These are given away to charity homes to avoid waste," added Liau.

In fact, she said, a charity had helped to kick-start her thriving business.

Liau, who was the Love and Care Society president for 10 years between 1999 and 2009, said she had asked a good friend to help bake cakes for a charity fund-raising effort.

"His homemade pastries were an instant hit and started receiving an overwhelming demand.

"That is how we decided to collaborate for a commercial partnership," she said.

Liau said that her 46-year-old business partner is an accomplished baker with over 30 years of experience.

"However, he wants to remain anonymous. He is rather shy of the limelight," she said.

Liau said that despite her business partner's low-profile, his Taiwanese-inspired dessert creations are attracting customers from all over the state.

"Orders have been pouring in from Kuala Lumpur and Penang as well, even though we only have a single outlet here," she said.

She revealed that their future plans include franchising the business.

"We definitely hope to expand. Hopefully, we will continue to experience the popularity of our Swiss rolls and cakes," said Liau.

The Swiss rolls are priced between RM12 and RM16. The cakes are priced from RM30 per kg.
