ARTISTIC SHIFT: The Kuala Lumpur-based artist has moved from painting flora and fauna to exploring the universe
GEORGE TOWN: SEEKING a new direction in life, artist Kally Liew Soon Fong has shifted her artistic focus from earthbound flora and fauna to the universe.
She is holding a solo exhibition of 36 abstract oil paintings at Galeri Seni Mutiara until June 30.
The "Universe Series-Solo Oil Painting Exhibition" is part of the annual month-long George Town Festival which started on Sunday.
Kuala Lumpur-based Liew, 44, is an avid photographer with a love for nature, in particular flowers and serene landscapes.
"In this series, however, I do my best to reflect a new direction in life, a far cry from my more down-to-earth topics of nature, flora and fauna
"Moving upstairs (universal space) I try my utmost to portray human feelings through the universe, using lots of colours, lighting and shining shades of celestial visionary lines and strokes."
Liew's meteoroids, asteroids and heavenly lights are full of energy and vibrancy tinged with a philosophically positive attitude for life and the future.
With such titles as Fun, Good Future, New Hope, Unity, Friendship, Happiness and Harmony, her paintings, which feature a simple and abstract style, send a message of peace and goodwill to the viewer, to persevere in the face of life's adversities.
"It is a difficult thing to portray contrasting thoughts and ideas through art, yet Liew has done it with her latest series of thought-provoking paintings," said the gallery's curator and director Koay Soo Kau.
Liew who has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Universiti Malaya has participated in many group exhibitions nationwide.
Franevyns Beaute (M) Sdn Bhd managing director Sharon Ng opened the exhibition.
Galeri Seni Mutiara is on the top floor of Whiteaways Arcade in Lebuh Gereja.
The gallery is open daily from noon to 6pm and admission is free.
