    King launches charity carnival

    Alor Setar: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah today launched a three-day charity carnival organised by the Sultanah Bahiyah Foundation (YSB) at the Darul Aman Stadium here.

    The "Karnival Amal Hari Penyayang 2012" is an annual fund-raising event which also incorporates a free mobile health screening programme for the rural poor.

    Tuanku Abdul Halim was greeted upon arrival at the stadium by the Kedah Council of Regency members led by its chairman, Tunku Annuar Sultan Badlishah, and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak.

    The Yang di-Pertuan Agong flagged off a charity cycling event and a charity run and joined a charity walkathon in the category for VVIPs.

    Tuanku Abdul Halim, accompanied by members of the Kedah Council of Regency, YSB chairman Tunku Panglima Besar of Kedah Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz, who is the daughter of Tuanku Abdul Halim, and Azizan then toured the various programmes held at the carnival.

    Tuanku Abdul Halim also launched the free mobile health screening programme which is a smart partnership between YSB, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and the Sunway Group.

    Earlier, in her speech, Tunku Intan Safinaz said the programme, which cost RM500,000 annually, was aimed at educating the people on the importance of maintaining good health.

    "The three-day carnival is aimed at generating funds for YSB to implement its programmes, including the free health screening for ailments such as diabetes and high blood pressure, to conduct urine tests and to treat minor ailments," she said.  

    Also included in the carnival, which began yesterday, are a futsal competition, a motor show, a blood donation programme, drawing and colouring contests, a lucky draw and entertainment shows. -- Bernama
