ALOR STAR: PHARMACISTS from the Kedah Health Department went on a campaign recently to create awareness on the dangers of taking medicines and health products indiscriminately.
Led by the department's deputy director (Pharmacy) Khong Lai Bun, the 15-strong group of pharmacists distributed flyers on the "do's" and "dont's" when taking unprescribed drugs at the North-South Highway toll plazas here.
Besides giving away information and tips on good health, Khong and company also gave away dates and kuih bahulu to users of the highway who broke their journey to enter Alor Star.
Khong said almost everyone now uses medicine in their daily lives either for health or beauty.
"We are concerned with this trend, especially when we wonder if the users really understood the side-effects of consuming their medicines or health products," he said.
Khong also advised the public against buying unregistered medicines and health products, especially those that contain steroids, sildenafil and phenylbutazone.
"We advise the public to check with their doctors on the best type of medicines and health products before they consume them," he said.
Members of the public are also welcomed to provide input, share their concerns, or ask for advice from the department by logging on to www.pharmacy.gov.my.
