VISITORS at Kek Lok Si Temple, Air Itam, during the recent school holidays were greeted by policemen who were on a mission to foster closer ties with the people.
GEORGE TOWN: They exchanged pleasantries with the officers and were given pamphlets with hotline numbers to contact in the event of a crime.
The officers were led by Northeast district police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng. Gan was accompanied by abbot reverend Jit Heng and temple trustee Datuk Steven Ooi during the visit.
Ricardo Manso and Sofia Menezes from Portugal praised the police for making the effort to reach out to the public.
"It is good to see policemen here in Malaysia talking to the people and listening to their plight.
"We are glad that the Malaysia police have taken an initiative to foster closer ties with the people to raise crime prevention awareness," said Manso.
Tri Widodo from Indonesia also praised the officers.
He said this was rarely done in his home country.
He said the men in blue deserved a pat on their back for making an effort to distribute emergency contact numbers to the public.
Gan said the police would continue practising community policing at major tourist spots on the island.
"We want the people to see the police presence and feel safe while on tour.
"Another objective is to collect public feedback and map out ways to improve our services to the people," Gan said.
