IPOH: SOME 800 guests attended the 1Malaysia Parents Day event organised by Penggerak Perpaduan Masyarakat (PPM) at the Red Crescent Hall here recently.

The event was a joint effort by PPM from Ipoh Barat, Ipoh Timur and Tambun.

The event's guest of honour was Perak state National Unity and Integration Department deputy director, Hajar Ahmad.

Also present were Ipoh Timur Barisan Nasional coordinator Datuk Thong Fah Chong, Ipoh Barat BN representative Dr Cheng Wei Yee and Bercham BN coordinator Lim Huey Huey Shan.

Hajah said the tasks carried out by the PPM officers included creating unity and reducing social tension among races in the community.

"They also served as intermediaries in bringing problems of the community to the respective agencies for counseling," she said.

"According to the Gobal Peace Index 2011 (initiated by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Sydney),

"Malaysia ranked 19th in the world and second in Asia, for achieving peace via the 1Malaysia spirit."

Meanwhile, event organising chairman Low Kim Piau said the younger generation must be reminded not to neglect their aged parents and leaving their responsibilities to old folks' homes.

The event concluded with the 1Malaysia Dance and dragon dance performances on stage.
