ALOR STAR: Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah will launch the Kedah Malaysian Girl Guides Association's Pekan Nat Pandu Puteri 2012 here tonight.

The queen, who is also the royal patron of the association, is also expected to mingle with some 3,000 girl guides, including 11 from five countries (Pakistan, the Philippines, Lebanon, Zambia and Yemen) at the fair on the grounds of Alor Star Tower.

Kedah Malaysian Girl Guides Association chairman Datuk Seri Tunku Soraya Tuanku Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah said the pekan nat concept, based on the traditional Malay flea market, was chosen to create a bazaar atmosphere for the participants to meet the queen.

She said the event, held in conjunction with the association's 80th anniversary celebrations, will house some 50 stalls offering products and food.

The stalls include those run by girl guides, besides regular traders.

Several programmes have been lined up for the fair, which began late last month.

They include activities and performances by the association's Pandu Puteri Tunas, Pandu Puteri Remaja and Pandu Puteri Renjer.

Other highlights include a variety show and band performances by a number of popular groups such as Ukays and XPDC.

A shadow play by the well-known Seri Asun group is also expected to be a major crowd-puller at the fair, which opens from 9am to 11pm. By Fariza Uzmat
