Sinking five-foot-way a hazard

GEORGE TOWN: A SINKING five-foot-way outside the shop lots in Jalan Krian here is a hazard to many who set foot on its damaged surface.

The tiles have cracked badly and the surface of the floor has been deteriorating for years with no respite in sight.

Residents are up in arms as no one is bothered to rectify the appalling condition.

Lim Thoon Deong, 58, is concerned that someone may trip over while passing that section of the walkway.

"I walk past the section every day and notice the surface is sinking rapidly. Action must be taken immediately to repair the sinking surface," Lim said.

He lamented that the parties concerned had turned a blind eye to the matter and neither the shop owner nor the local council has stepped in to rectify the situation.

Another passer-by Goh Lay Choo, 32, said she was puzzled over the unnecessary delay in re-surfacing the defective five-foot way.

"Public safety is compromised when the local authority drags its feet in solving this," she said.

When contacted, a Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) public communications department spokesman said the matter would be highlighted to the relevant section.

She said MPPP would identify the party responsible for repairing the sinking surface.

"We will liaise with the shop owners there to solve the problem."
