MASTERS: Ukraine national team share their expertise in Minden

GEORGE TOWN: THE Ukraine national swimming team conducted a series of training sessions and seminars at the USM Swimming Complex in Minden here recently.

The programme was conducted by world-class swimmers (two men and four women), and Olympic coach Vladimir Shamych, who has produced European, Olympic and world championship medallists.

The two male swimmers were Denys Barabash, a former European Youth Olympics festival silver medallist and Davyd Ovsepyan, a Ukraine youth champion.

The female swimmers were Ganna Dzerkal, a medallist at the World Championships, Varvara Yangicher (European Youth Olympic Festival winner), Nadia Gumeniuk (Ukraine champion) and Julia Kiselova (European Junior champion).

The one-month programme, which involved the Universiti Sains Malaysia's Sports Excellence Centre and Penang Amateur Swimming Association, saw full participation by swimmers from the USM sports excellence centre and Penang's Malaysia Games elite swimmers.

The course was attended by more than 50 swimmers and coaches from Penang Swimming Club, Chinese Swimming Club, Bukit Jambul Swimming Club, Butterworth Marine Star, Permata Swimming Centre and Bukit Mertajam King Fisher Club.

USM sports coordinator S. Somasundram said the excellence centre was set up and financed by the Ministry of Higher Education for swimmers from all universities and institutions of higher education in the country.

Somasundram said the centre also accommodates swimmers who leave school at age 17 but do not get a place in universities or institutions of higher education.

"Our vision is to make Malaysia a significant swimming nation," he said.
