GEORGE TOWN: The St. Xavier's Institution (SXI) choral-speaking group emerged as champion again, for the second year running, at the recent Penang State Choral Speaking Championships for secondary schools.

Conductor of the SXI team, Walter Tan, also retained his title as best conductor for the year.

The SXI team will now represent Penang at the national championships to be held in Sepang, Selangor, in September.

The team's performance titled But Why? But Why? But Why? pondered on the environment, pollution and Mother Earth, and won the judges' nod for best presentation.

SXI's teacher in charge of choral speaking, Noor Munira, said several key factors contributed to the team's success.

"A well-written script with great attention paid to details, including speaking techniques, clear and correct pronunciation, synchronised movements as well as well-thought-out stage choreography is imperative to a successful formula," she said.

The competition was officiated by the Penang Education Department human resource development and management head Abu Bakar Muad, who also gave away the awards. By Paul Toh
